2015 Ohio Valley Chapter
CotY Awards Deadline is Near!
NARI invites its contractor members across the nation to compete for the prestigious Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards in recognition of their achievements
throughout the year. Companies from one-person shops to the largest remodeling firms report that winning a CotY Award is a major factor in enhancing their image within the industry as well as with the buying public. Good news for those in the Greater Cincinnati
area, Ohio Valley NARI has a Local CotY Awards Program!
The deadline for this year's Local CotY Awards is on November 10th at 5 p.m.
If you are thinking about entering, please take a look at these steps:
Start gathering photos:
Before and after photos are required for each entry. Make it a point to take before photos at the start of every project. Take your after photos from the same angle to show judges the
same perspective. Take lots of good quality photos of your work.
Plan your entry:
Winner's entries are always well thought out. Arrange your photos, drawings, project descriptions, etc., in a way that's easy to follow, from the beginning to the end of the project.
Follow the rules:
Choose your category carefully, fill out the forms completely, and submit your entry by the deadline. Ohio Valley NARI will have a recognition ceremony on December 9th, 2014.
The recognition ceremony for regional and national awards will take place at NARI's Evening of Excellence in the spring of 2015.

Portland Oregon was the setting for the Fall Leadership Summit, titled NARI 2020, The Journey Continues. Eric Hoyer, Director, from Hamilton Parker, and Ric Kirchner, the Association Executive
for Ohio Valley NARI attended the summit this year. The historic Benson Hotel was the host location for the summit, which was packed from start to finish with great information about where NARI is today and what we are trying to reach by 2020.
Led off by a truly motivating speech, Roger Crawford shared with us the power of "I Can!" Roger is the first and only person in American history to be a United
States Professional Tennis Association athlete and play a Division I college sport with a severe disability. Today, he is a public
speaker, author, and is still a certified tennis professional. Several famous individuals and incorporations, such as Marriott Hotels, Nike, Chris
Evert, and Ronald Reagan have acknowledged Crawford for overcoming handicaps. He was also featured in Chicken Soup for the Soul and
in the NBC Emmy Award winning movie In a New Light.
Soon to follow was the Membership Idea Fair, where 8 different chapters who have had success in attracting and maintaining membership each manned a table. The rest of the attendees were assigned
to groups of 1 to 8 and moved from table to table for 7 minutes each to capture ideas on how our chapter can grow and do the same as they did. Lots of terrific information came from this session. The rest of the day featured updates on chapter programs,
economic updates from the remodeling industry, and a chance to review some of our legal responsibilities in each of the chapters. The day ended with a President's reception and lots of great networking with several different chapter members. This was truly
a jammed packed day.
After a little sightseeing in downtown Portland and enjoying the truly delightful September weather it was time for rest before beginning day two. First up on Friday was a breakfast session with
Deepa Mungara, from Houzz, who shared with us information about their Social Media application and how to use it to our chapter's advantage.
Next up was the Observations from the High Wire, led by NARI National Chairman Art Donnelly, MCR, CKBR, with perspectives, lessons and the mindset it takes to drive your chapter to new heights.
Shortly thereafter, the House of Delegates meeting commenced, where NARI business is reviewed and voted upon. Most notably during the review were two provisions that rename the Past Presidents Council to the National Presidents Council, more accurately describing
their participation and continuing engagement on the national and local levels. Of even more significance, a new category of membership has been established and ratified. The Retired Member is any individual that has been a NARI member for 10 or more consecutive
years, and is now fully retired from the remodeling industry. This membership carries with it a no dues policy and the opportunity to retain their active certifications at no charge for life.
Insights from Senator Tim Hutchison and his lobbying efforts followed giving us a bit of a peek into the inner workings of Washington. Soon after we had an enjoyable luncheon meeting, that gave
us insights on the Strategic Renewal plan for NARI, part of the 2020 Vision, with Dean West from Association Laboratory. There were some interesting statistics in this session that will help guide the chapter during the coming year.
The remainder of the day featured updates on all the great programs and discounts available to NARI members. We will be updating all members with this
information soon to insure you take full advantage of your membership. The day concluded with a fast paced program of various chapters telling us what is going on at the local level around the country and then we capped it off with a closing dinner hosted
by the Oregon Chapters of NARI. More networking followed further building relationships and many in the group set sights on downtown Portland for one more enjoyable evening before the trip home.
RECENT OHIO VALLEY NARI EVENTS
Annual Golf Outing
The last few months have been busy ones for Ohio Valley NARI, with several events for the membership. In August, our annual Golf Outing was held at the Glenview Golf Course
on August 14th. Fifty golfers teed off to a delightful day on the course, with temperatures in the low 80's. The Low Gross winners were Steve Wethington, Matt King, Joe Loudon and Jeremy Ghent with a blazing 57. Winners of the Peoria Handicap
system were Andy Donnelly, Jim Francis, Mike Knipp, and Jerry Cannon with a 69. The Long Drives were captured by Matt King and Scott Bray, while the Closest to the Pin winners were Manny Craver and Byron Watts. Mike Knipp had the longest putt of the day.
We want to give a big thank-you to our sponsors who without their support this day would not be possible. Our Hole Sponsors were Hyde Park Lumber, Schluter Systems, Hamilton Parker, Pease Warehouse,
KBR, Custom Distributors, Properties Plus Home Remodeling, Mueller Roofing, Kemper Design/Louisville Tile, RSVP Ohio, and Building Value, LLC.
Our dinner sponsor was
Cincy Magazine, the beverage carts were sponsored by Mont Granite and Perfect Solutions A/V. Pella and Cincinnati Floor and Window Coverings sponsored the lunch and KBR was our Platinum Sponsor
of the event. Finally, we offer many thanks to Andrew Glasgow, CR, of H. Glasgow Construction and Jerry Beerman from Alluring Glass for their help in coordinating the details of the event.
September Membership Meeting
September 11th was the date and the Designed Exterior Showroom by Ply Gem at Marsh Building Products in Loveland was the setting for the September
Membership meeting. The meeting featured an interactive discussion centered around finding the time to invest in yourself and your team. Too often in the day to day hustle of life, we fail to take that step back and insure that a balance exists in our lives.
Our two speakers were from outside the industry and gave us insights on how getting lost in our work can have significant impact on our lives and how we should seek the balance to make it all work together. Participation was optional for the follow-up and
homework was given to prepare for the October morning session. Getting out of your comfort zone sometimes is difficult but can be very rewarding with just that leap of faith. All in all, it was another great session for members to take advantage of.
Feature Vendor Night
Mad Tree Brewing was again the site of this year's Feature Vendor Night. This location for this event proved to be popular for the second year, with nearly
120 members and guests of Ohio Valley NARI in attendance. October 6th was this year's date and a mild evening greeting guests to the event. A Mexican Fiesta dinner was featured along with complimentary beer, soda and door prizes. Once the attendees had
a chance to eat, drink and enjoy the overall atmosphere and networking opportunities, everyone had a chance to gather around the vendor tables and hear a little bit about the products on display at the event. Our beer sponsor was Cincinnati Floor and Window
Coverings. Our Vendors in attendance were The V Collective, Suntouch Flooring Systems, Speed Pro Imaging, Schluter Systems, RSVP Ohio, Marsh Building Products, LP Building Products, Hamilton Parker, FISH Window Cleaning, Dal-Tile International, Flooring America,
Custom Distributors, DJB Enterprises, Building Value, LLC, Fin Pan Inc., Pella Windows, Ferguson Enterprises, and Cincinnati Floor and Window Coverings. Susana Ibarra from Susana's Catering in Loveland provided a wonderful meal for all to enjoy. This event
would not be possible without the extra special efforts of Matt Bliemeister, Jen Sizemore and Josh Hansman, from Cincinnati Floor and Window Coverings, who spent countless hours putting this great event together. It looks like this event and the venue is
going to be around for years to come.
