By Morgan Zenner

Robert Grant, president of Contemporary Woodcrafts Inc., in Chantilly, Va., has been making cabinets since 1984. He started his company out of his basement after working as a woodworking school teacher and at an architectural firm building pieces for the Smithsonian.

"I'm best known for building custom cabinetry to go in any room of the house," Grant says. He uses locally produced wood and paneling, and his product is locally sold through remodelers, builders, interior designers, as well as direct to consumers.

RRP Changes - Again
By D.S. Berenson

On Oct. 4, 2011, the latest changes to the Environmental Protection Agency's lead Renovation, Repair and Painting rule (RRP) became effective. Finalized in August, this latest round of changes continues to showcase the EPA's inability to understand its own law or the industry to which the law applies. Demand for energy-efficient improvements waxes and wanes, but the long-term trend is up

Mark Franzoso describes himself as being "pumped" when the Home Star, or "Cash for Caulkers," bill was introduced in Congress last year. After all, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of February 2009 helped Franzoso Contracting, in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., sell more doors and windows than it had ever sold before.

Home Star, Franzoso figured, would be even better. Fast forward a year, and Home Star is gone, though not forgotten. Having passed by a House vote, the bill - touted as a jobs-creation measure - slowed, stalled, and died in the Senate.

Where it goes from here

Home Star may be dead, but that's not the end of home improvement companies' interest in weatherization. Far from abandoning the idea, an increasing number of companies, including Franzoso Contracting, are remaking themselves as "energy contractors."

BWC Updates by Frank Gates

The BWC Board of Directors officially approved the new Grow Ohio Incentive Program. The Program allows new employers in Ohio to join a Group Rating Program any time during the year or receive 25% off of their first two years workers' compensation premium.  The start date has not been determined. .

Additionally, the BWC has placed a Moratorium on sending Group Rating savings estimates for the July 1, 2012 rate year.  The BWC is finalizing the rating structure and discounts that will be available to employers. The Moratorium should be lifted at the November BWC Board of Directors meeting.
